Las Vegas (often informally abbreviated to "Vegas") is the most populous city in the state of Nevada and an internationally known vacation, shopping, entertainment, and gambling destination. It was established in 1905 and officially became a city in 1911. It is the largest U.S. city founded in the 20th century.
In the middle of the desert, Sin City or Vegas, as it is nicknamed, is like a mirage. The colors of the casinos and their neon lights, contrast sharply with the dry and barren land around. These giant mega-casino hotels are decorated with lavish care and attention to detail to create a fantasy-like atmosphere. They have names that evoke romance and mystery giving a glamorous image to the city, which in turn has made it a popular setting for films and television programs.
